Apply for “Normalizing Abortion: Self-Portraits & Stories”

A Group Photography Exhibition Curated by Phoenix Mayet

CALL FOR ENTRY
The Art Center is hosting a group exhibition from October 11 – November 8, 2019. All works considered should be photographic self-portraits.

Approximately 1 in 4 American women will have an abortion at some point in her lifetime. This means abortion is a common part of reproductive healthcare and a normal part of our collective experience. Yet, news coverage of the issue has sensationalized abortion by addressing only the most extreme cases, those involving rape, incest, or a woman who’s life is at risk. Normalizing Abortion: Self-Portraits & Stories seeks photographic self-portraits from individuals who have chosen to terminate a pregnancy because it was the right choice at the right time for them. We seek to de-stigmatize abortion and to affirm women’s right to self-determination. Participants are asked to include a short narrative (200 words max) discussing their experience, for display during the exhibition. We encourage artists to freely interpret the notion of self-portrait. While we encourage open participation as a means to end the stigma associated with abortion, you need not show your face or reveal your identity if you would prefer to remain anonymous.

There are two submission options: 1. Framed image for wall display, or 2. Digital image for video display.

All proceeds from submissions to this show will go to benefit the work of Planned Parenthood.

ELIGIBILITY: All photographic methods will be accepted. International entries are welcomed. Work must be framed or gallery wrapped and ready to hang or stand on a pedestal. Frame rental is available on request. Shipped work must be safely packed and a return label must be included. Insurance is recommended as The Art Center is not responsible for any damage in transit.
